Ways to deal with negativity towards your hair!

Photobucket
It is so stupid how something as hair can spark so much debate, heated conversations, and unwelcome advice. Especially when all you want to do is mind your business and just wear your hair the way it grows out of your head. At the end of the day, I know these random people's opinions doesn't matter but it certainly doesn't make me feel good. I feel like putting my hair in a bun just so I don't have to deal with people's stupid unwanted comments.
If you find yourself being the recipient of negative comments about your natural hair, here are some ways we recommend to deal with it.

Completely ignore it. Act as if the negative comment was so insignificant that you didn’t even hear it. Goes something like this:
Negative commenter: Why don’t you just retouch your hair?
You: (blank stare) Hey, are you feeling cold? I sure am freezing.

Direct them to the wonderful online natural hair community. There are still people out there who think natural hair is ugly. Don’t get mad–they’re entitled to their opinion. Just send them the links to the many gorgeous heads of hair seen across the web like Nikole of The Moptop Maven and her homey Lori Cotton of His Hers Chicago; Jessie of Jessie Adore; Marian of MarianKihogo.com, etc., etc., etc. Basically kill them with natural hair fierceness.

Nonviolent protest. If the negativity comes from those close to you, rebel by wearing your hair as big as you can possibly get it. Nothing gets the point across quite like a big ole fro.

Confront the offender. I often find myself using humor in just about every situation to keep my stress levels low and myself happy. Have a clear conversation about how the offender’s comments about your hair make you feel and that they need to stop is often the best way to solve the problem. Just like with any confrontation, do it when you’re not emotional. Be calm, state your feelings, and move on. You’ve got better things to worry about like the millions of hairstyles you can style your hair in.

How would you handle this situation?

  1. I don't care if folks wanna get relaxers, but don't attempt to try to tell me what to do with mine. And try to get negative with it and u might find yourself embarrassed dealing with me.

  2. When I was natural I had to endure many people telling me what they thought about my hair. I just SMILED and kept it moving. I recommend you to do the same!

  3. If you dont want to hear it then ignore them. *those annoying people will go away* trust me they will.

Where your hair in a bun if you think it will help but eventually you are going to wear a style that they are not accustomed to. You can weather this storm.
