Discussion: Why dont black people really participate in winter sport?
Winter has arrived and the holiday season too. In this time of the year a lot of people go on a winter sport vacation in Switzerland, France or Austria. This made us wonder, do black people also participate in winter sports that often? First off, have you ever seen a black person play lacrosse? Have you? And if you have by some strange coincidence, was there just one? Maybe two?
The majority of black people in Europe either live in poverty or live around other successful black people who grew up in poverty. You got basketball hoops and football fields all over the place and all you need is a ball between ten dudes. Between you and your nine friends, either one of you has a ball or a few of you can throw in a couple of dollars and pick up one to play with. The cost of entry is low. Then when you get to school and they provide you with pads, you’ve already been playing for your whole life.
Hockey, lacrosse, and winter sports, on the other hand, have a much higher cost. Hockey, you’re spending a least €100 on skates, €100 on a stick, and who knows how much on pads, especially if you’re a goalie. You think that you’re going to find twelve kids who can afford to spend probably €500 each plus ice time and league fees?
Lacrosse is similar. Those sticks are, what, €50? For each person? As compared to a €10 basketball everyone who’s playing can use? Plus helmets, cups, and whatever other padding lacrosse players use (I don’t know or care). And winter sports like snowboarding and skiing. Snowboards and skis are expensive. Then there’s the boots and the bindings and the whatever else goes with them. Snow pants, gloves, goggles. And you can’t do those things on the street, no matter how much it snows. So there’s transportation to a mountain, lodging, lift tickets, food for the trip (unlike football/soccer, you can’t just run into your house and grab a Pop Tart when you’re done), etc.
So yeah. Hockey, lacrosse, and winter sports are more common for white people. Not because black people are incapable of playing, but because these sports are more economically feasible for white people. But what do you think?
