Nailz trend: Dark, Layerd and Stormy

This Fall season there's a new contender for a spot in your makeup drawer. Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week was painted in with shades that aren't quite black: burnt plums, deep umbers, incarnadine reds, and moody viridians. These shades have all the drama of your basic black without the harshness, and they set off skin tones beautifully.

Backstage manicurists threw their support behind classic shades of rich burgundy and midnight blue that picked up on the strong, feminine attitude of the collections. Their advice? Keep your nails short and square with rounded corners and apply two generous layers of lacquer finished with a glossy top coat for a take-charge effect.

The dark, layered nail polish look is a favorite trend because it is easy to achieve at home. All you need are a few dark polishes. Here are some fashion-forward color combinations:
-Oxblood over chocolate: This shade is richer than Karl Lagerfeld himself.
-Sapphire over emerald: Jewel colors are some of the easiest to layer. You can never go wrong!
-Sparkling grape over black: Black becomes playful under a bright shimmer.
-Deep cherry over plum: The best way to wear fruit.
