Hair Care: Flat Iron Black Hair - How much is too much?

Since I’ve stopped relaxing, I realized that a really good flat iron could get my hair JUST as straight as a relaxer could. But there is a caution, you may already know that daily heat styling isn't recommended. How much is too much?
It's recommended that heat styling should be done no more than once per week. If you do heat style it, your hair should always be freshly shampooed, conditioned and completely dry before thermal styling. Flat ironing dirty hair will only "cook" soil in and will lead to damage.

If your tresses are in any way excessively dry, under-conditioned, damaged or in any other less-than-healthy state, flat ironing won't help, and will likely make things worse. Even on a once-per-week regimen, heat styling can still be bad for your tresses.

Another fact, if you're not using an iron with adjustable temperature controls, you need to get one As Soon Ass Possible!

Most flat irons come with temperature control. Therefore, you can control the heat settings usually between 180° to 210° degrees to your liking.

Some like it to be straight to the bone and set the temp to the highest temperature possible. But please be carefull, it's based on one’s hair type, it is important to adjust heat according to your hair's specific needs!

Of course it's your own choice on how much you want to heat style your hair, but don't forget to regular deep conditioning your hair, it's a must if you want to prevent dryness.

How do you flat iron your hair?

  1. I flat iron my hair with smaller irons 1 1/2 inches or less .. . big, chunky sections won't straighten properly.

  2. TIP; It is also very important to select the best flat iron depending upon your hair type like this post already mentions..... like flat iron for natural hair, flat iron for black hair, flat iron for thick hair , african american hair etc.
