Reppin Africa: Loreen Talhaoui Wins Eurovison Song Contest
Loreen Talhaoui a 28 year old swedish singer from Moroccan descent won the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, Azerbaijan. She was representing Sweden as she rack up a total of 327 points. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. It is also one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally.
Performing “Euphoria,” a clubby meditation on the power of love, she howled into a wind machine and suggested that romance helps us transcend everyday troubles: “Forever and ever together, we sail into infinity,” she sang. “We’re higher and higher and higher, we’re reaching for divinity.” Her occasional writhing and jerky dance moves screamed “woman in a straight jacket.” But the choreography also reflected the madness that frequently accompanies infatuation.
Loreen was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1983 but the family later moved to Västerås, where she attended school. She spent most of her teenage years in Gryta, a residential area in Västerås.Both of her parents are Berbers from Morocco.
