Read all about the Eyelash Extensions Procedure at 24/7 Silk   A few weeks I headed to 24/7 Silk  in Amsterdam, the eyelash extension boutique owned by Consuela Jacobs for my first-ever lash extensions. Consuela walked me through the procedure, asked questions about my lash length preferences and on the best style for my eyes. After I lay down on the bed, Consuela removed all makeup residue on my lids and lashes. It was very important to keep my face and lashes free from makeup and oil-based skin care products. The lashes especially should be clean. After that Consuela applied a micro tape on my lower lashes to prevent them from sticking.

 Each eyelash extension is made from a soft synthetic material and looks almost identical to the natural lash. Each lash extension should be placed individually. This requires a precise touch and patience. A full application can take an hour to an hour and a half. The use of tweezers can aid this process, and make it more sanitary to the client. Because each extension is bonded to a natural lash, and not the eyelid, they remain in place as long as the natural lash remains. Consuela offers eyelash extensions that are treated with a special primer that helps strengthen the bond and protects the extensions.

 The lash extension process can take 1.5-2 hours but since you need to have your eyes closed during the whole time, you can take a peaceful nap to pass the time which is what I "sort off" did. My full set took more than two hours, because of my natural eyelashes being very curly, that makes it more difficult to apply glue on each individual synthetic lash and carefully adhere each hair to one of my natural lashes. It was a painless process, only the bed was not that comfortable.

I'll need to head back in about 2-3 weeks to get some lashes touched up but if I take good care of them, the full set can last up to 4 weeks. My lashes will fall out naturally over time (growth cycle of lashes is different for everyone but tend to be within 60-100 days), so touch ups will be needed if I want to maintain them. At the end of the lash extension that attaches to the natural eyelash should be carefully coated with adhesive and then placed on top of the chosen lash.

 I was warned to avoid getting my lashes wet in the first 24 hours after my lash application. I had to avoid swimming pools and hot saunas because extreme heat is not recommend before 48 hours. After that, it is possible to go swimming while wearing eyelash extensions. I was also warned not to use eyelash curler, perm or tint the extension lashes. If you do want to wash your face, dont rub your eyes too hard when cleaning. I should only use non-oily, non-creamy cleanser to remove make up and use water-based mascara if you want to add mascara (no waterproof mascara).

 Dont forget to keep an eyelash comb handy to straighten up any stray lashes. You should comb your lashes carefully and gently only when needed. The total bill will come out to EUR 50 and you can add up lashes after a few weeks, that will cost EUR 35,-. Please do your research and make sure you go to a credible and certified salon to have lash extensions done.

I love my lashes they look professional and well laid out. I have always dreamed of long, thick, curly and dark lashes. I can spend less time applying makeup. No need for mascara that can smudge or look clumpy. I can still sleep, shower, swim and exercise as normal. It really looks & feels natural and it is easy to look after.
