Elegancy101 Special: ML TOURS - Cultural Trip To Morocco - Part 2: The Historical Volubilis!

While driving towards Meknes, the modern city bustling with nightlife, restaurants and an impressive royal palace, we stopped over at the Roman ruins of Volubilis (Oualili). The road that leads from Fez to Meknes is one of the most fascinating you will find in all of Morocco. We've seen amazing lunar landscapes and valleys with wonderful gorgeous and small villages near oases. The Roman ruins of Volubilis were not to be missed. The site is very big and really gives an idea of the lifestyle in this Roman outpost. Read more about our Volubilis adventure after the jump:

Volubilis was an important Roman town situated near the westernmost border of Roman conquests in present day Morocco. It was the administrative center of the province Mauretania Tingitana.

During Roman times, Volubilis was a major producer of olive oil and grain, which were exported to Rome, contributing to the province’s wealth and prosperity. The Romans evacuated most of Morocco at the end of the 3rd century AD but people continued to live in Volubilis for many centuries.
Volubilis was excavated by the French during their rule over French Morocco between 1912 and 1956.

This area is the perfect place to find your inner peace. It is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable places I've been.

There aren't many hotels near Volubilis so most people decide to stay in Meknes. Transport is not a problem,it is only about 20 km and taxis are very cheap.
