Black History Month: About Donyale Luna - World's First Black Cover Girl!

Donyale Luna is world's first black cover girl and she overcame deep prejudice in her career. In the 1950s and 1960s the fashion industry entirely excluded non-white models from its magazines, advertising and catwalk shows. But it was Donyale who became the first African American model to appear on the cover of British Vogue in 1966.

BHM - Fashion Discussion: Black Models On The Rise In Europe - For How Long?

It is Black History Month! That means it's time to recognize the central role and achievements of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. As you may know Elegancy101 was present at the Mercedes-Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week. This time we've seen a slight change on the runways. There was actually a larger representation of non-white models on the runway shows compared to previous editions. It could have been the industry's response to the Diversity Coalition's highly publicized campaign for more black models. Although Amsterdam Fashion Week is not the most prominent fashion week, still this sensitive topic of racial diversity in the fashion industry is making a widespread move and actually moves people all over the world to take action. Although there has been improvement, must we still remain vigilant?

Black History Month Discussion: Are Urban Brands Still Relevant?

In the early to mid nineties urban brands were all the rage. Guys walked around in Ecko sweatshirts, Karl Kani and Rocawear. Girls rocked Baby Phat, Apple Bottoms, and Iceberg with confidence. I remember the Baby Phat handbag I was yearning to purchase and the Pastry runners collection in my closet. And don’t get me started on the Karl Kani jacket that I received as a gift that I would wear anywhere and everywhere. All these brands are still on the market, but are they still relevant? Would you still rock it? Discuss after the jump:
