Black History Month: Princess Elizabeth of Toro

Princess Elizabeth Christobel Edith Bagaaya Akiiki of Toro is the Batebe of the Kingdom of Toro. She is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, diplomat, model and actress. Her large eyes and regal stature enraptured American audiences, who were seduced by her graceful gaze and royal lineage. Born in 1936, Elizabeth was the daughter of one of the kings of the four tribes who formerly ruled Uganda. She attended the most prestigious boarding schools and universities.

After finishing elementary school, she was sent to Gayaza High School, a prestigious female boarding high school in Buganda, followed by Sherborne School for Girls, in England, where she was the only black student. Elizabeth was the third African woman to graduate from Cambridge University in London, and was Uganda’s first female lawyer. Her whole life shifted, however, when Princess Margaret of the United Kingdom invited her to model in a charity fashion show. Audience members loved, then clamoured for her presence. She obliged, eventually gracing the pages of American Vogue and landing a November 1969 cover of Harper’s Bazaar.

In a 1970 article in Ebony Magazine, Elizabeth stated, “I feel that I was very fortunate to have come to this country at a time when people here are really interested in Africa and African heritage.”

Elizabeth returned to Uganda in 1971, and by 1974 she was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by Idi Amin. She fled her country several times and upon last update was serving as Uganda’s ambassador to Germany. Afterwards she got married and started a family.
