How To Break Through: The Process Of Jewelry Creation By Evi~lance

If you love bold, make-a-statement accessories, you might just fall in love with the offerings from Evi~lance. It is known for its SELF-MADE outrageous and very eccentric designs. But how does the art/jewelry designer Evita Tjon A Ten go about her work? Find it out after the jump:
Evi~lance is all about embellishment and vibrant colors! There’s no way that a accessory-obsessed woman can resist these fun accoutrements. The most amazing part is that everything is handmade! Reason for Elegancy101 to ask the designer a few questions!

When did you first realize you had a flair and a passion for jewelry design?
I love bright colors and I love jewelry. One day I wanted to have a necklace with a certain color for a dress I was wearing for one of my shows, I’m a singer, and I couldn’t find the right color. That’s when I decided that I have to do my own stuff, Evi~lance jewels.
How did you go about creating your first item of jewelry?
I started with a color and began to do something, it worked great, and from there I started creating a necklace.

When you are designing a piece, does it grow organically as you make it or do you prefer to design it on paper first?
A piece grows organically; I make it in my head. I tried to design some pieces on paper but that doesn’t work with me.

What are your favourite materials to work with? My favorite material is rubber. It’s light, flexible, soft, and strong and I can buy this material in different bright colors. However, I also like handmade beads of recycled paper and canvas. If I use this material, I paint on it and it looks great. I also use foam, freshwater pearls, glass beads, wood and metal beads for jewelry collection.

Is there a particular type of item you enjoy designing most?
I’m not into earrings and bracelets. I love creating necklaces and that’s what I make. But there is no telling what the future might bring.

Naturally, women are all very different and so there are a lot of varying personal tastes to cater for, do you find yourself changing designs much within your collections to cater for a mass audience?

Every piece in my Evi~lance collection is unique. There is only one of each necklace. I make what I would like to wear myself. If I don’t like a piece I will put it aside and wait some weeks to see if I still feel the same. If so, I’ll undo it and re–use the material.

Your pieces are widely regarded as being timeless. Do you bother paying much attention to trends?
I make what I like to wear myself. I don’t really bother with trends. My goal is that my pieces of jewelry are real eye–catchers and an ornament in color, which suits the personality and clothing of the woman who wears it.

Where do you find your inspirations for your jewelry?

I try to make pieces of jewelry that stand out, look playful, and are stylish. My inspiration comes from the colors and shapes of the materials that I use.

What are you future plans with Evi~lance?
I’m busy with many things. My jewelry is one of them. I would like to see more women wearing my jewels. They are simple, yet modern and contemporary.
